Atarax [Hydroxyzine]


Atarax (Hydroxyzine) is an antihistamine anxiolytic drug. It is used since 1956 for the treatment of insomnia and anxiety disorders.

Hydroxyzine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, thus it also can be used to treat allergic conditions. The drug has pronounced anxiolytic and hypnotic activity and does not form addiction unlike typical hypnotics and anxiolytic drugs.

Dosage and administration

The dosage for symptomatic treatment of anxiety is 25-100mg/day. The usual dosage is 50mg/day (12.5mg in the morning, 12.5mg afternoon and 25mg before bed). In severe cases, the dosage can be raised to 300mg/day.

Patients with renal and liver insufficiency should receive lower dosage.
